The penultimate episode of Torchwood: Miracle Day strikes, and it really needs to start rising above those accusations of emptiness and give us some action. In fairness, the last couple of episodes have been an improvement; I’ve felt the pleasant, rushing feeling of events speeding by.
So as the end of an epic ten-week, ten-review journey ambles slowly towards us, will Russell T. Davies and his writers start to wrap it all up in a beautiful bow?
Time Travel Without TARDIS
Unexpectedly, this episode starts off with a two-month gap. This came as a surprise, but by the end, I rather wished they’d done it a few episodes ago. The fiddly suburban subterfuge feels a lot more unique than the generic breaking and entering in the first half of the run.
Gwen is now a drug dealer with a comatose old man in her cupboard, Oswald Danes is on the run, the jump forward has given Esther an excuse to stop being so wet, Rhys gets a substantial role again – yes, I enjoyed this a lot more.
Not to mention, of course, the nearness of the end means movement towards a climax. We still don’t entirely understand the miracle, but all the pieces are in place and, yes, I’m genuinely enthused for next week.
Questions Without Answers
One question I find myself asking is – what answer can possibly live up to nine weeks of hyping up the mystery? It’ll either be something obvious involving the universal inverting of Jack’s blood, or sci-fi babble that sounds like a diary entry from an acid trip.
With that in mind, perhaps I shouldn’t get my hopes up, but at the end of the day, this is what they’ve been teasing us with all series. Not to mention, will someone die? Rex is the obvious candidate, so could they go the other way and kill Esther? Either way, hopefully it’ll be sad. You can usually rely on Russell T. Davies to jerk the tears when he wants to.
Whatever happens next week, I seem to be excited about it still, so the penultimate episode has done its job – no small task after how dull some of this series has been. Now all they need to do is deliver. Check the episode out on iPlayer, let us know if your excitement is rising yet.
